Content credentials can help describe the history of a media file, but they answer a different question from whether a person consented or a client has the necessary rights. Teams should know what a credential can and cannot prove.

01

Think of credentials as provenance evidence

A credential system can attach information about an asset's origin or editing history in a machine-readable form. Depending on the implementation, it may indicate that content was created or changed by a particular tool or workflow.

For a production team, the practical value is a portable record that can travel with media and help a downstream reviewer understand the file's history. It is not a substitute for preserving contracts, rights evidence, or provider decisions.

02

Understand the limits of a credential

A credential does not establish that every source image was licensed, that a likeness consented, or that an advertisement is not misleading. Its claims are only as useful as the signing, verification, and data practices behind them.

Credentials may be missing, stripped, invalidated, or unavailable in a downstream platform. A workflow should describe those states and avoid treating the absence of metadata as proof of wrongdoing or its presence as blanket permission.

03

Connect provenance with rights records

Use stable asset and request identifiers to link a credential to the rights and campaign records that explain the intended use. Preserve the credential exactly as received and identify its source, verification result, and time.

Keep personal or confidential information out of a portable credential unless the disclosure is necessary and authorized. A public provenance record should not expose a contributor's private enrollment data.

04

Be honest about implementation status

A planned C2PA hook is not the same as an implemented credential issuer or verifier. Product teams should identify the provider or library, the claims it supports, and the tests that demonstrate the workflow before marketing the capability.

Approved.video may connect provenance metadata through an authorized provider path as the product develops. No credential is implied by a local rights record or by an unavailable generation workflow.

Questions & answers

Do content credentials prove consent?

No. They can describe media provenance, while consent and licensing require their own records and scope checks.
